Industrial 3D printing company EOS has expanded its EOS M 290 family with a new machine that EOS M 290 1kW.

This new laser powder bed fusion (LPBF) metal additive manufacturing (AM) platform is specifically designed for high-volume production and can meet the specific requirements of copper and copper alloys, which are often difficult to process for applications such as heat exchangers and inductors.

In fact, the machine’s market launch is coming EOS Copper CuCp and EOS Copper CuCrZr materials who are already qualified for the platform. Additional materials will be developed later in 2024.

One of the first adopters of the technology was GBZ Mannheim GmbH & Co.KGa specialized manufacturer of inductors and other advanced components for the automotive industry.

“Additive manufacturing and new one-kilowatt technology allow us to design and manufacture copper inductor applications that are more powerful and durable, now manufactured in one piece without solder joints,” he said Thomas Corell, Managing Director at GBZ Mannheim. “The core elements of inductor applications are now integrated into a single structure, and the result is much higher optimization of cooling channels, lower power consumption throughout the product life cycle and we see excellent repeatability on the production side.”

The main features of the 3D printer include:

  • Build volume: 250 x 250 x 325 mm (9.85 x 9.85 x 12.8 inches)
  • Powerful: One (1) 1,000 watt laser
  • Productive: A volume rate of up to 55.4 (cm³/h)
  • Scanning speed: up to 7.0 m/s (23 ft/s)
  • Focus diameter: ~ 90 µm

The EOS M 290 1 kW is already available for purchase and can be used in the areas of space travel, energy and mobility/transport.
