CINCINNATI, OH, UNITED STATES, March 4, 2024 /EINPresswire.com/ – Michelin Molding Solutions (MMS) in Greenville, SC, has announced its second AddUp FormUp 350 Powder Bed Fusion (PBF) following the successful installation and operation of its first machine. -Machine purchased one in 2022. This machine is the sixth addition to a growing global fleet of FormUps currently in use in Europe and North America. Thanks to the productivity and serial production capabilities of AddUp’s additive manufacturing (AM) machines, each new FormUp 350 replaces five older AM machines.
MMS is Michelin’s global tire vulcanization mold manufacturing division. From locations in Europe, Asia and North America, MMS supplies molds to Michelin tire production facilities around the world. The complex tire geometries required by Michelin for superior tire performance require equally complex shape geometries that cannot always be produced using conventional manufacturing processes. MMS has been using metal AM to meet these requirements for almost twenty years. MMS chose AddUp’s FormUp 350 for its high productivity, robust quality output and state-of-the-art technology for safe metal powder management.
“MMS is very satisfied with the productivity and quality that can be achieved with AddUp’s FormUp 350. This level of productivity allowed us to retire older and less productive 3D printers. “We have seen improvements in the cleanliness and safety of our operations and our operators really appreciate the ease of use from build plate programming to machine setup to the machine user interface,” explains Glen Nelson, technical development manager at MMS.
One FormUp 350 can produce the amount of tire mold inserts that previously required five metal 3D printers, faster and more reliably. Through the industrialization of metal AM over the past two decades, MMS has been able to produce millions of molded sipe inserts with increasingly sophisticated shapes to improve traction and wear over the life of the tire.
