Nanan STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) Academy has donated a state-of-the-art 3D printer to Holy Trinity Catholic School Division (HTCSD).

Shaun Nanan is the Academy’s academic director.

“This is just a technology tool that is essential for the future,” he said. “This is something that will be used much more frequently. We started doing that at our summer camp that we had.”

Nineteen children attended the first Skills for Success Summer Camp, held July 31-August 4 at the Phoenix Academy at 278 4 Ave NE. The camp for children ages 6-13 was hosted by Nanan STEM Academy in partnership with Holy Trinity Catholic School Division and Skills Canada Saskatchewan.

“We saw how excited the kids were and how much they could learn just by playing around and developing their own 3D models in software called TinkerCAD, which allowed them to 3D print the actual objects and see how how they came to life,” noted Nanan.

The 3D printer Bambu Labs X1 is already being used successfully by HTCSD.

“This is something that they can implement in schools that will allow students to get up and running with this technology right away and learn the essential skills and use of the tools for tomorrow,” he added.

The Nanan STEM Academy after-school program restarts on September 9th and runs every Saturday from 1:30pm to 2:30pm. The program provides STEM classes for youth in grades one through twelve and beyond.

“We have an exciting program that aims to develop the person. It aims to impart essential skills for the future of work. It encourages creativity and imagination, and refines problem-solving skills, critical thinking, communication and cultural literacy. “That’s building trust,” Nanan said. “These are all the essential skills that will be needed for the future. This is what employers are looking for and also prepares students for post-secondary education.”

On August 26, the Academy also hosted a workshop at the Moose Jaw Public Library.
