A pioneer in 3D printing technology will invest $ 13 million to expand its headquarters in South Carolina, government officials said.

According to 3D Systems, the Rock Hill, South Carolina expansion will add a 100,000 square foot building to the existing campus. With the new facility, the company can consolidate its production, quality control and logistics activities and expand its material development laboratories.

The company that pioneered stereolithography 3D printing in the mid-1980s now manufactures printers, materials, and software for applications in a wide variety of industries, including automotive, aerospace, defense, medicine, and dentistry, and durable goods.

The project, which is part of a restructuring initiative announced last year, is expected to be completed in early 2022. The company expects to create 50 new jobs as part of the expansion.

“This expansion of our Rock Hill campus allows us to bring key elements of the business together to drive efficiencies and accelerate industrial-scale additive manufacturing innovation and customer adoption,” said Jeffrey Graves, President and CEO of 3D Systems, in a statement . “Through our restructuring and investment activities, we will create new jobs in the area over the next five years that will contribute to the economic development of Rock Hill and South Carolina.”
