Icon Technologies purchases 3D Systems’ EXT 1270 Titan Pellet 3D printer to accelerate thermoform mold production

3D systems announced this Icon Technologies Limited, a thermoforming and rotational molding company, has purchased an EXT 1270 Titan Pellet 3D printer. Based in Winkler, Manitoba, Canada, the company specializes in providing customized thermoformed solutions to its OEM customers for a variety of industrial applications, including recreational vehicles, building products and HVAC systems.

By adding the EXT 1270 Titan Pellet 3D printer to its manufacturing floor, Icon says it will produce large thermoform molds at higher speeds and at significantly lower costs.

“Given the diversity of industries we serve and the large molds we produce, it is essential for us to maximize our productivity,” said John Loewen, founder and CEO of Icon Technologies. “The EXT Titan Pellet 3D printer from 3D Systems is the best solution to offer our customers high quality products. The combination of build volume, industrial technology, economical raw materials and the heated chamber, as well as materials validated for thermoforming applications, sets it apart from other large format printers.

“I also visited the manufacturing facility last year and was blown away by the application engineering team and the variety of projects they work on. Aside from the people, I saw first-hand the production line, the quality assurance process and the attention to detail, confirming to myself that I made the right choice in terms of not only the service we provide to our customers , but also to help our customers grow their business. ”

The 3D Systems EXT 1270 Titan Pellet System is an industrial 3D printing solution designed to utilize low-cost thermoplastic pellet raw materials. The system offers print volumes up to 1270 x 1270 x 1829 mm. EXT Titan pellet systems are compatible with a range of nozzle sizes and allow for the printing of finer layers than other available systems, according to 3D Systems.

3D Systems states that the EXT Titan Pellet 3D printers provide up to 88% savings in raw material costs and lead time reductions of up to 65% compared to machined metal or cast ceramic alternatives. The company says the 3D printed molds are cheaper, quicker to produce and “extremely” powerful.

The company says composites such as glass-reinforced polycarbonate are proven solutions for forming thick sheets, with the molds reportedly having survived more than 1,000 shots without any noticeable wear.

“Icon has long-standing customer relationships and is highly regarded for delivering high quality molds,” said Brand Mount, Global Director, Business Development – Titan, 3D Systems. “As the first manufacturer in Canada to integrate an EXT 1270 Titan Pellet 3D Printer into its manufacturing workflow, it demonstrates its commitment to continuous innovation while paving the way for its customers to transform their business.”

“We are proud of our collaboration with Icon, both through the work of our Application Innovation Group, which validates materials and printing processes for Icon’s applications, and through our global support network. I look forward to seeing how Icon can grow its business by maximizing the benefits of this new system.”
