When was the last time you looked at your printer and thought it was fun? Personally, as a kid I probably printed out coloring pages I found online. However, for many of us, the printer is a functional device used at home to print legal, medical, and work-related documents, as well as the occasional instruction.

Luckily it’s 2023 and we now have 3D printers that can print cooler things than documents (which of course doesn’t deviate from the need for laser and inkjet printers). For those who want to try their hand at prototyping, artwork and/or want to make their own toys, figurines or desk decorations, a 3D printer is a nice device. And while they can be quite pricey, one of our editor’s favorites is currently on sale for well under $1,000.

Currently, you can snag the AnkerMake M5 3D printer at 30 percent off Amazon. While that might not sound like a huge discount, it does mean that this nearly $800 3D printer is currently available for around $560.

We here at Popular Mechanics recently announced our 2023 Gadget Awards and on that list is this AnkerMake 3D printer. This AnkerMake model, which is listed as the best 3D printer in the “Smart Home” category, convinced our editors with its ease of use and fast functioning, among other things. The brand highlights the latter feature, pointing out that it now reaches a speed of 500 millimeters per second if you upgrade your system to PowerBoost 2.0.

This model’s ease of assembly and use makes it an especially solid option for those new to the 3D printer game. “Thanks to its ability to self-calibrate over 49 grid points, it simplifies the tedious preparation and automatically optimizes the scaling of 3D object files,” wrote our editors at the Gadget Awards about the AnkerMake M5. “This brings a level of simple press-and-play operation to the printing process that was previously sorely lacking. Just tap or send a file to the touchscreen and you can create a character as easily as you would print a paper document.”

Review editor Hunter Fenollol reviewed the printer last year and found the AnkerMake M5 3D printer to be “the first printer that just about anyone really can pick up and use.” To try printing at home, we highly recommend grabbing the AnkerMake M5 3D printer to play with while it’s available on Amazon for under $600.
