What you need to know

  • Elegoo is a leading brand in 3D resin printing.
  • The company just released an FDM printer called the Neptune 2.
  • It’s only $ 160 and it’s surprisingly great.

Elegoo makes some awesome printers that consistently land on my list of the best 3D printers, but so far all of them have been resin printers and not FDM-based printers. FDM (Fused Deposition Modeling) printing is what most people think of as 3D printing. A long strand of plastic is melted onto a metal bed and the model is built up in layers. Elegoo changed that with the release of Neptune 2. I’ve had a device for a few days and I’ve enjoyed it. Although this article is not a review, I can tell you a little about the printer and my first impressions.

category Elegoo Neptune 2
Print size 220 mm x 220 mm x 250 mm
Print speed 30-60 mm / s
Nozzle diameter 0.4 mm
Supported filament type PLA, ABS, TPU, PETG
Extruder type Bowden
Storage solution MicroSD
Slicer Elegoo Care

The Neptune 2 is a surprisingly good FDM printer with some high-end features and a great price. Many printers in the $ 160 range lack the latest technology such as a filament runout sensor or memory function if a power fails. With the Neptune 2, however, these are available as standard. It’s great to see a budget printer with these advanced options as standard, and I hope this will start a trend for all budget 3D printers.

The Neptune 2 still has some money-saving shortcuts, however. While the build plate is technically removable and flexible, it is not attached by magnets – binder clips are used instead – and there is no live Z adjustment or automatic bed leveling. The bed is set with four large rotary dials, and they work pretty well, but I’d love to see a Live-Z tweaked in the software to make it a little easier to set on the fly.

The print quality itself has been pretty good so far. I’ve only printed three models so far – so this is not a review – but all three have printed very well. I used the Matterhackers Build series PLA, and the crystal blue looks really good with the Neptune 2. I printed this excellent cartoon Bernie Sanders in mittens from ChaosCoreTech at a layer height of 0.2 mm, and the print looks really good.

Overall, I’ve been pretty impressed with the Neptune 2 so far, and now that I know it’s only $ 160, it could turn out to be the deal of the year. Stay tuned for the full review later this month.

Simple and inexpensive

Matterhackers PLA Build Series is my go-to for projects that need to be completed. It prints smoothly and sands well; Perfect for anyone painting a model. It’s also very cheap.

Test: The FlexiSpot E6 is a standing desk that knows when to stop

The FlexiSpot E6 has the excellent, quiet double motor design of FexiSpot with heights between 60 cm and 123 cm, which is slightly below the range of the E5 from 62 cm to 125 cm. With the E6 you also get a much more stable, optimized leg design and a new anti-collision system that automatically prevents the desk from being raised or lowered if a significant restriction is detected.
